Three Most Used Industrial Caulking Compounds
Caulking for both, domestic and industrial, purposes is used to fill in the unwanted cracks and openings that occur in the construction material. Be it walls, windows, door frames or floors, caulking has extensive usage to ensure that there is no air, heat or water leakage.
Caulking is commonly applied on the areas where two or more parts come together. Joining two parts can result in gaps and this can adversely impact the entire structure of the building, industrial or otherwise.
This, however, does not mean that caulking can be used as an alternative for adhesive compounds even though some of the caulking materials do have adhesive tendencies.
Industrial caulking is no different than domestic caulking as the purpose of the both is same, but industrial caulking does utilise different compounds for the process. In industrial caulking, following are the most commonly used sealants.
Silicone is the most commonly used sealant in domestic and industrial caulking both. Its tendency to work effectively with all sorts of construction materials makes it a preferred sealant for industrial caulking.
It is suitable for surfaces like metal, wood, stone, and bricks, assisting you in sealing almost every place. Silicone is preferred for its durability and it does not shrink. So you won’t have to worry about your exterior or interior industrial caulking enduring any damage.
Silicone also has excellent adhesion quality and serves in joining various surfaces together. It can stretch up to three times and compress up to one-half the width, making it favourable for the materials. Silicone is widely used in high-rise buildings for sealing.
It can also be used in bridge joints and for various weatherproofing purposes. Silicone can be used in industrial caulking for sealing of electric sockets, wires, and fire-rated joints.
Epoxy sealants comprise two components that require mixing together prior to application. They have a resin and a hardener. Both these components are combined together in a predetermined ratio to ensure that the sealant joins the materials optimally.
Epoxy sealants possess high strengths and have commendable cure toughness. They have high durability and tendency to resist the environmental and chemical damages. The adhesive nature of Epoxy sealant makes them preferable for industrial caulking.
They provide a protective layer on the surface that can be easily painted. Industries like automotive, aviation and boat manufacturing use Epoxy extensively for its non-conductive and rapid drying nature.
3. Acrylic Sealant
Processed from acrylic acid through a catalytic reaction, acrylic sealants are a highly durable compound for industrial caulking. They are resistant towards any dilapidation caused by the environmental factors.
Acrylic sealants, however, unlike Epoxy, are prone towards chemical damage. Aside from this, acrylic sealants are highly effective for industrial caulking as not only they are resilient but they have high holding power as well.
They can be an excellent choice for industrial caulking because they do not allow filtration of any foreign particles. Acrylic sealants in industrial caulking can be used in sealing doors and windows.
